River Songs #7

A walk at Braystones

This is my third time walking along the shingle ‘street’. It feels so remote I can only get here every once in a while, but the place still intrigues me.

Braystones is a thin strip of land between the railway line and the beach on the west coast of Cumbria, a few miles south of St Bees. Over the decades, local people have gradually bought up plots along the shingle, where they can live off grid, mostly undisturbed.

I get the sense that things may be changing, with more building going on, and huts looking smart and marketable. But I can’t be sure. It would be sad if the creases get ironed out, but I don’t live here so who am I to say.

For the time being, Braystones continues to escape the grubby grip of tourism and hold its place on the edgeland.
